Italian Arum

Arum italicum





Description

A tuberous perennial with arrow-shaped leaves that are marbled with white or yellow. Inflorescence is a white or yellow column of tiny flowers (the spadix) that is encased by a greenish-white hood (spathe). Foliage is absent in the summer, and replaced by spikes of bright orange-red berries.

Moist, open woodlands, forest margins

Prevention

Use a native alternative in your garden, or plant Italian arum only in a pot. Do not discard of plant trimmings in a natural area. Look for this plant in woodland margins, especially those near a residential area.
